Colors of the Void: Yellow

Mirrors

The first map in a series where Gnostic, Demonic, Esoteric, Cosmic Horror mythology and of course Colors converge in the core of chaos.

If you haven't played the map yet Go first here! since there's a lot of spoilers ahead.

There're also some reviews by Mikko Sandt and quakis. Thanks guys!

For this map I choose Yellow as the color of deceit, often associated in Christianity with Judas Iscariot, and in modern color psicology with happiness but also with danger. In the map, yellow is almost the first thing that catches your eye, especially a yellow suit character: "The Man in Yellow".

Always remember that even if some of the lore are based on real texts and existing fiction, the scope of this piece of art is certainly entertainment, being said this let's continue...

What is the Man in Yellow's lore and what's his real name?

Close people and clients call him by his name, as some notes show, however the self titled "Man in Yellow" is a professional signpost and wall painter who has been shown a preference for yellow color. His name is Galben Castaigne, and he is a direct descendant of the Castaige family. Galben is the owner of a paint shop that only sells yellow stuff. He's also well versed in Gnosticism and Esoterism, although he has been warned by mental health specialists to avoid lectures that feed magical thinking. He is known to own a copy of the script from the play "The King in Yellow" a play that supposedly drives people into insanity. Although nobody knows where he hides it.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.

Who Is Yaldabaoth?

There are different names and versions of who this entity is. Some very old Gnostic texts tell Yaldabaoth is an evil god who created this universe out of arrogance, others call him Saklas or Samael and say it is a fool or blind entity, some others even say that YHVH or God is indeed Yaldabaoth while others say YHVH is the name of other Archon. The Archons are the seven (more or less) sons and helpers of the evil god or Demiurge. The Demiurge and the Archons control every aspect of the universe and the human nature through the imperfection of matter; emprisioning the soul.

Yaldabaoth also represents the work of the maker who gets lost into their making believing they are the only and original creator, their curse is their need of praise.

Who is Hastur?

Introduced by Ambrose Bierce, Hastur was originally depicted as the benevolent god of shepherds, he can however cause horrible floods but also divert them to the sea if a shepherd ask him to in shrines. With the pass of time and through the pen of Robert W. Chambers, Hastur has been associated with more sinister behaviors, some call him "The King In Yellow" after a play in which his name appears. This entity supposedly comes from the lost city of Carcosa near Aldebaran (Usually considered a good star) or perhaps Algol (The Demon Star). Ancient occult knowledge says Hastur is a spawn, avatar or manifestation of one of the Archons, which of these Archons, is unknown. So maybe both Hastur, and The King in Yellow are just different faces of this same Archon. This Archon uses the Yellow Sign and other type of devices, like yellow paint in videogames, rubber ducks or plays to control the mind of people. Although we don't understand what his true intentions are.

Unlike Yaldabaoth, Hastur is not "blind" and has a personal agenda beyond just keeping the world in a constant cycle of life and death keeping souls trapped in physical bodies. Hastur is a master of deceit, he likes to trick people and other entities/demons and give them orders to please him.

This Archon loves to have multiple avatars and use pale masks.

Hastur also represents the concept of the unreacheable perfection that can destroy one self.

Happiness may come if not sought, but if looked for will never be seen

-Haita The Shepherd

What is Floron and what is the Picatrix?

This information is really hard to find on the internet in just a single place. I'll try to explain it as better as I can. The Cherubim are the second order angels closest to God (the first order are Seraphim) The non-canonical biblical text "Book of Enoch" tells that various Angels revelead against the god of the old testament on ancient times, ie: they mated with human girls! and corrupted humanity, their offspring  were mutant canibal giants called the Nephillim, so God flooded the planet in order to wipe most of human race, and also left the Nephillim without bodies. Anyway, according to italian encyclopaedist, physician and astrologist Cecco D'Ascoli one of these "Ex-Cherubim" is called Floron, a very powerful entity or demon, the catch is that you can trap Floron in a mirror and use it as some kind of oracle revealing everything about the past, present and the future.

Floron represents the occult and unknown wich can bring chaos and misery if is not controlled.

The Picatrix is one of numerous medieval grimoires that reveal exact processes to summon spirits and demons on certain astrological conditions through fumigations and rituals using talismans, amulets and sigils.

What all this have to do with aliens and the insurance division of earth defense forces?

Well this will be explained later in the series, be patient. In this first map we can assume the aliens are using the mirrors and Floron's powers as a kind of weapon against humanity (and the EDF) causing earthquakes and acid contamination. At the end of the level Duke frees Floron which causes an explosion and alignment of Floron and Hastur's sigils. What will be the consequences of this?

INFO:

My original idea was having a central hub with a high spire, and that every mapper made their sections around it (talk about egocentrism), so I started the map doing exactly that, but I pretty much messed my participation with this one, they almost kicked my butt for changing things on different mapper's sections without  asking, I even broke one part! What was I thinking? man I really regret doing that, anyways they managed to save the map to the previous functional version. Personally I feel this map is a bit of a mixed bag, probably because I didn't give the mappers enough directions on what my vision was, but hey it was a COMMUNITY build project, not "Norvak messing with the community telling everyone what to do and changing things like a spoiled child build project" so I think it's okay. A lack of communication and maturity on my part made me abandon the project half when it was finished, fortunately Michael Crisp took the wheel and released the map as planned, oh I also produced the music for the map, it was used in the Counter Strike Zombie Scape mod as well.

Reduked Series: Duke Nukem Remixed

Another tragic story, well it's no so tragic since you can listen to the 2 albums on Bandcamp and Youtube...

Reduked started as a 10 track album with remixes of Duke Nukem 3D, it was originally released in 2010 with overall good reception, so I keep working on more remixes for a part two album, and even a third EP with remixes from Duke Nukem II some of which you can listen exclusively on soundcloud, while I was more or less ready to launch Reduked II, I decided to rework the first one to get a more polished sound, everything was going fine until the self sabotage demon started to talk to my ear, and I felt like any of this was enough, I keep reworking and reworking some of the remixes or changing the mixdown of others, up to a point, where in 2016 I finally decided to upload everything once and for all to SoundCloud, completely avoiding the album format, (you still can listen to some of the tracks on SoundCloud) some months later I had a hard drive crash, and you guessed... I lost all the source files.

Two years later I chose to finally upload a definitive version and launch Noise Boulder Records on Bandcamp at last, I recovered some of the mixdown tracks, finished some unfinished tracks and made a new remix from the recent (at the time) World Tour edition of Duke Nukem 3D, Reduked: Deluxe edition came to fruition in 2018, the new master was aimed to increase the dynamic range of the songs (a bit of technical terms ahead) following that misguiding trend of the -14 LUFS, so in theory this master sounds better than the one from SoundCloud but on the other hand it sounds quieter, I'm not here to judge so probably you need to compare them your self.

Anyway I'm planning to upload a definitive (ahora si) version of the album to Spotify and other streaming platforms (with permission of Lee Jackson, I'm still unable to contact Bob Prince) so probably I'll need to licence the remixes with a third party service. Probably I'll go with the Soundcloud master (louder) with some fixes.

Also 2020 I released a 10 anniversary remaster of the original Reduked plus a remix that was gathering dust.

Nightshade Army

 DESCRIPTION:

A Roch inspired night-time city single player map.

RELEASE DATE:

3rd June 2010 (Original Version)

20 June (2012 3-BKC Version)

REQUIRES:  DukeNukem 3D Atomic edition, Eduke32 , Dukeplus optional

INCLUDES:  New music , sound clips

INFO:

Nightshade army was my first released map, it was published in 2010 and updated in 2012. It has various parts from previous unreleased maps by me (hidden complex inside bar from a map called "Biotech", Sushi restaurant from a map called Dark Horizon, some rooms and buildings, etc) and  it's heavily influenced by the likes of Red3 by Merlijn Van Oostrum, Bottles to the Ground by Aymeric Nocus and classic city maps like the Roch series. The updated version added some minor tweaks like reducing the number of blue keycards from 4 to 3, and changing the boss fight. Although the updated version is still around on different servers, I made this version speciallf for Megaton Edition Workshop where it was quite popular back in the day (Fuck you Gearbox!) The map is also part of "Dukeplus" which some people still play today, although is no longer updated by the developer (DT)

Here is a gameplay video and download links.
